, Forty puzzles and problems in probability and mathematical statistics are listed in the book by Wolfgang Schwarz. First, the reader is confronted with these puzzles and problems and asked to think about them as well as to think about possible solutions to the problems. If the problems are too difficult for the reader to be solved by himself, in the second part of the book hints are given for each problem how to proceed to find the solution. Again, if these hints are insufficient for the reader to solve the problem or puzzle, the final part of the book contains the formal solutions in great details.
The puzzles and problems listed in the book are very stimulating and provocative in the sense of forcing the reader’s ambition before accepting help in form of hints or complete solutions. The puzzles and problems are taken from probability theory as well as from applied probability in the field of mathematical statistics. (Zentralblatt)

By Kenneth Ireland, Michael Rosen.
Springer 1990
. 1 vol. (XIV-389 p.)
, The second edition contains two new chapters, one on the Mordell-Weil theorem for elliptic curves and one on recent developments in arithmetic geometry. The authors wrote the first edition with the purpose to give insight into modern developments in number theory by showing their close relationship with classical, 19th century number theory. The authors wrote the new chapters 19 and 20 in the same spirit. In chapter 19, they give a proof of the Mordell-Weil theorem for elliptic curves over ℚ without using Kummer theory or algebraic geometry: they first give Cassels' proof of the weak Mordell-Weil theorem which uses only a weaker version of Dirichlet's unit theorem for number fields; and then they derive the Mordell-Weil theorem using the standard descent argument which is worked out by elementary arithmetic. Chapter 19 is meant as a preparation for chapter 20, in which the authors give a very interesting overview of the important developments in arithmetic geometry after the appearance of the first edition of their book. Among other things, they discuss the Mordell conjecture proved by Faltings, the Taniyama-Weil conjecture and the result of Frey, Serre and Ribet that this implies Fermat's last theorem, recent progress on the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture by Coates-Wiles, Gross-Zagier, Rubin, and Kolyvagin, and the derivation of Gauss' class number conjecture from the results of Gross-Zagier. In chapter 20, the authors do not give proofs but they give sufficient background to understand and appreciate the results. Chapter 20 is an excellent introduction for those who want to study the subject more thoroughly. (Zentralblatt)

, “A course in computational algebraic number theory” contains 148 algorithms, which were all up-to-date when the book came out. Hence, this book is the source for number theorists wishing to learn about a special method and/or implement an algorithm without studying the theory in greater detail. Among these algorithms, many are new or improved. In most cases, their analysis and their complexity are given (not the complexity of the problem, as stated in the preface) and, most importantly, valuable remarks on implementations. Here one sees the great experience of the author, the founder of the package PARI.
The book begins with a chapter devoted to the most important routines from elementary number theory. It is followed by one on algorithms from linear algebra and lattice theory. Especially important are the sections on Hermite and Smith normal forms and lattice basis reduction algorithms. ... (Zentralblatt)

The book may be regarded as self-contained, even though some familiarity with the classical subject is presumed at both the student's and the researcher's level. Some familiarity with the general concepts, methods and purposes of Constructive Mathematics may be useful as well, in order to make smoother the impact with the first chapters of the book. Banach algebras and spectral theory for operators on a Banach space, VIII. C∗-algebras, IX. Normal operators on Hilbert space, X. Unbounded operators, XI. Fredholm theory.
This book is an excellent text for a first graduate course in functional analysis. The early chapters are devoted to the various classes of commonly occurring topological vector spaces (with the exception of Chapter II). The exposition proceeds from the particular to the general, reflecting the author's stated belief that this develops the student's intuition better than the more austere approach of Bourbaki. Many interesting and important applications are included. For example, Banach limits and Runge's theorem are in Chapter III. In Chapter V the author develops the Stone-Čech compactification via Banach space duality, the Stone-Weierstrass theorem via the Kreĭn-Milʹman theorem (à la de Branges), and the existence of Haar measure on a compact group via the Ryll-Nardzewski fixed point theorem. In the reviewer's opinion, the author has chosen exactly the right topics on general topological vector spaces for a first course. For example, strict inductive limits and distributions are discussed, but the Mackey-Arens theorem, barrelled spaces, and the like, are not.
Operator theory makes an early appearance in the second chapter, where the spectral theorem and functional calculus for compact normal operators are established. As an application of the spectral theorem, the basic facts about Sturm-Liouville problems are obtained.
The second half of the book deals with operator theory in earnest. Chapter VI includes the Banach-Stone theorem and Lomonosov's theorem. Chapters VII and VIII are fairly standard. Chapter IX obtains the spectral theorem for bounded normal operators from the theory of abelian C∗-algebras and includes a treatment of multiplicity theory. The spectral theorem is generalized to the unbounded case in Chapter X, which also includes Stone's theorem and the Plancherel theorem. The final Chapter XI presents the basic facts about Fredholm and semi-Fredholm operators.
This book is a fine piece of work. It includes an abundance of exercises, and is written in the engaging and lucid style which we have come to expect from the author. (MathSciNet)

, In comparison to the first edition, many new exercises and various comments have been added, and the references have been updated. The main change refers to the last chatper on Fredholm theory which has been completely revised and simplified.
For the reader's convenience, we briefly recall the headings of the eleven chapters of the book, which go as follows: I. Hilbert spaces. II. Operators on Hilbert space. III. Banach spaces. IV. Locally convex spaces. V. Weak topologies. VI. Linear operators on a Banach space. VII. Banach algebras and spectral theory. VIII. C * -algebras. IX. Normal operators on Hilbert space. X. Unbounded operators. XI. Fredholm theory.
It seems worthwhile to emphasize those topics which are somewhat beyond the scope of classical textbooks, namely the diagonalization of selfadjoint compact operators with applications to Sturm-Liouville problems in Chapter II, Banach limits and Runge's theorem on the approximation of analytic functions by rational functions in Chapter III, and the fixed point principles of Schauder and Ryll-Nardzewski with applications to Haar measures in Chapter V. At the end of the book, an Appendix is added on the dual spaces of the Lebesgue spaces L p and the space C 0 of continuous functions vanishing at infinity.
The book is a very readable and highly original contribution to the vast market of textbooks on functional analysis. It should be valuable to a wide audience of teachers and students. (Zentralblatt)

, Publisher's description: "A Course in Topological Combinatorics is the first undergraduate textbook on the field of topological combinatorics, a subject that has become an active and innovative research area in mathematics over the last thirty years with growing applications in math, computer science, and other applied areas. Topological combinatorics is concerned with solutions to combinatorial problems by applying topological tools. In most cases these solutions are very elegant and the connection between combinatorics and topology often arises as an unexpected surprise.
"The textbook covers topics such as fair division, graph coloring problems, evasiveness of graph properties, and embedding problems from discrete geometry. The text contains a large number of figures that support the understanding of concepts and proofs. In many cases several alternative proofs for the same result are given, and each chapter ends with a series of exercises. The extensive appendix makes the book completely self-contained.
"The textbook is well suited for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate mathematics students. Previous knowledge in topology or graph theory is helpful but not necessary. The text may be used as a basis for a one- or two-semester course as well as a supplementary text for a topology or combinatorics class.''

By Richard A. Holmgren.
Springer-Verlag 1996
. 1 vol. (XV-223 p.)
, The book is the second edition of a one-semester course on discrete dynamical systems [1st ed. in (1994; Zbl 0797.58001)]. The main changes of the second edition are to introduce the notion of chaos for real functions (Chapter 8) before the symbolic dynamics, and metric spaces transferred into Chapter 11. Consequently, in Chapters 8, 9, 10 and 11 (the Logistic function, parts I, II, III and IV) had to be completely revised. A new simpler proof of the special case of Sharkovskij's theorem is given (Chapter 5). Some new exercises have been added and more difficult ones have been equipped with hints. (Zentralblatt)

, This book is an introduction to discrete dynamical systems. It starts off by reviewing elementary properties of functions in one real variable and the topology of real numbers. After introducing the notions of periodic points and stable sets, the author formulates and proves a special case of Sharkovskiĭ's theorem. Some attention is paid to differentiability, including the mean-value theorem, and there is a brief introduction to parametrized families of functions and bifurcations. Cantor sets, which play an important role in chaotic dynamics, are presented for the logistic map. Other topics that are covered are symbolic dynamics and chaos, topological conjugacy and bifurcations for the logistic map, Newton's method for quadratic and cubic functions, numerical solutions of differential equations, and the dynamics of complex functions, including the quadratic family and the Mandelbrot set. Computer algorithms are presented in the appendix.
Generally, the book is elementary but well written. In particular, the presentation of the elementary material in the chapters on symbolic dynamics and the Newton method is nicely done. The author writes: "My text arose out of the desire to provide my students the mathematical background necessary to understand the text by R. L. Devaney [An introduction to chaotic dynamical systems, second edition, Addison-Wesley, Redwood City, CA, 1989; MR1046376 (91a:58114)].'' I think that the chapters on symbolic dynamics and the Newton method indeed may be of help. On the other hand, the text under review has an overlap with another book by Devaney [A first course in chaotic dynamical systems, Addison-Wesley, Reading, MA, 1992; MR1202237 (94a:58124)]. The texts are written from a different point of view. Holmgren's book has a more topological flavor than Devaney's text, while the latter has a more dynamical flavor. To conclude, I think that the level of the presentation is suitable not only for advanced undergraduates with a year of calculus behind them, but also for serious high school students who have interest in the mathematics behind some beautiful pictures of discrete dynamical systems.
